Elizabeth Schuyler

Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton, born into a wealthy family, married General Washington’s aide Alexander Hamilton and supported the Patriot cause during the Revolutionary War.

Despite having no formal education, she helped her husband draft political essays and correspond with heads of state following the end of the war – all while raising a large family.

Hamilton died in a duel with Aaron Burr, adding to the stress and strife Elizabeth had to endure after his affair in 1797. Soon after, she lost her sister, her oldest son and her father.

Despite these tragedies, Elizabeth was determined to make a difference. She co-founded the Hamilton Free School, the Society for the Relief of Poor Widows with Small Children, and the Orphan Asylum Society.
